Its active ingredient, mesotrione, is based on a naturally occurring compound produced by the bottlebrush plant (Callistemon citrinus) that inhibits photosynthesis in susceptible plant species. It is absorbed by plants through the roots, shoots and leaves and distributed throughout the plant by both xylem and phloem translocation.

Meso is one of the few herbicides that controls weeds in cool season grasses during the seeding process and provides pre-emergence and some post-emergence control of many weeds.

Weeds controlled: Common Chickweed, Common Dandelion, Creeping Bentgrass, Crabgrass – Large, Smooth and Southern, Ground Ivy, Henbit, Clover, Lawn Burweed, Mouse-ear Chickweed, Oxalis, Speedwell – Persian, Purslane, Shepherd’s Purse, Sowthistle, and Wild Violet. Meso can also suppress Annual Poa.
