Winterberry (Ilex verticillata) is a deciduous native shrub known for its striking cherry-red berries and critical role in supporting wildlife. Ideal for wet, boggy areas with full sun to partial shade, this shrub is a host plant for the larvae of Henry's Elfin Butterfly and provides nectar for bees and other pollinators with its inconspicuous greenish-white flowers in late spring. The berries, which appear in fall and persist through winter, serve as a vital food source for backyard birds and small mammals when resources are scarce.

Key Features:

  • Wildlife Support:
    • Host plant for the larvae of Henry’s Elfin Butterfly.
    • Nectar-rich flowers attract bees and other pollinators.
    • Vibrant red berries provide essential food for birds and mammals during fall and winter.
  • Seasonal Interest:
    • Spring: Greenish-white flowers emerge on leathery, dark green leaves.
    • Fall/Winter: Bright red berries bring vibrant color and sustain wildlife through colder months.
  • Dioecious Plant: Requires both male and female plants for berry production. Female plants produce the striking red fruits, while male plants serve as pollinators. Opt for a 4-pack to increase the likelihood of berry production.
  • Hardy and Versatile: Thrives in sun, part shade, or shade and adapts well to wet, boggy soils, making it ideal for rain gardens, streambanks, and naturalized areas.
  • Eco-Friendly: Grown non-GMO and free of harmful neonicotinoids, promoting a healthy ecosystem for pollinators and wildlife.

Available in one gallon containers, ready for planting.

Why Choose Winterberry?

Winterberry is an exceptional choice for gardeners looking to combine beauty with ecological value. Its brilliant red berries provide essential winter food for wildlife while adding color and interest to your garden. Perfect for rain gardens, woodland edges, or naturalized landscapes, Winterberry is a low-maintenance shrub that supports pollinators and birds while enhancing your outdoor space year-round.

Planting Tips:

  1. Location: Prefers full sun to part shade and thrives in moist, acidic soils, making it ideal for boggy areas, rain gardens, and streambanks.
  2. Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, Winterberry requires minimal additional watering.
  3. Maintenance: Minimal care required. Leave berries on the plant in fall and winter to provide food for birds. If desired, prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins to shape the shrub and remove any dead or damaged branches.

not bad
Format: Kindle
I loved the plot of this book. The characters just didn’t have a lot of depth. The connections and “love” just weren’t communicated very well in the writing. The author didn’t write the sweet psycho trope very well at all either. Lachlan was just a mess of a character.

A Beta Worth Rooting For
Format: Kindle
In Spare, Violet Fox flips the omegaverse on its head, giving us a Beta heroine determined to make her mark. Joining the Beta Trials to support her sick father, she's thrown into a pack that doesn't want her, especially the possessive Alphas. But here's the twist: their sweet Omega turns out to be her scent match. Cue the angst, forbidden tension, and a slow-burn romance that will make your heart ache in the best way. Violet Fox delivers an emotional, refreshing take on the genre, proving Betas aren't "spares." They're stars.

Beta, Alpha, Omega oh my!
Format: Kindle
Omegas are precious and given to Alphas & their packs... but the Betas want in too. To this end, the Beta government is rolling out its trial of assigning a Beta to each Alpha-Omega pack. But forcing a Beta into a pack where they are not wanted will not end well... Of course, no one expected the Omega to fall for the assigned Beta. Great read and cliffhanger

A familiar story, just with…..less.
Format: Kindle
So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.

Fantastic writing and non-stop action
Format: Kindle
This is a promising, fantastic beginning to what will be a 4-book series. Some readers may be content to read only the first 2 books, but I think you'll find that the story is so good that you'll want to keep reading books 3 and 4. Book 1 is about omega Elvana's introduction to the "Starling" brothers and their search for another missing person, Kelly. It's a bit of a rocky start, with deception and betrayal a key element. Hardly an auspicious beginning. Each member has their own path and purpose in the pack. Their interactions and the resulting narrative are so well-written that I found it difficult to put down. There is a cliffhanger that will have you reaching for book 2 as you finish, so make sure you have it on hand.
