King of the Garden is a legendary heirloom pole lima bean celebrated for its vigorous climbing vines, heavy yields, and exceptionally large, tender beans. A longtime favorite among home gardeners, this variety produces abundant pods filled with thick, creamy-white lima beans that are rich, buttery, and perfect for fresh shelling or drying.

If you’re looking for a productive, space-efficient climbing bean that delivers generous harvests and classic lima flavor, King of the Garden is a standout choice.

Why Grow King of the Garden Lima Beans?

🌱 Vigorous pole growth – Climbs 6–10 feet with strong vines
🫘 Large, plump beans – Thick, creamy texture
🧺 Heavy yields – Abundant pod production over a long season
🌿 Space-efficient vertical growing
🥣 Rich, buttery flavor – Superior to many bush limas
🌎 Nitrogen-fixing legume – Improves soil health
🌿 Certified organic heirloom seed

A favorite for gardeners who want both productivity and exceptional eating quality.

Plant Characteristics

  • Botanical Name: Phaseolus lunatus

  • Variety: ‘King of the Garden’

  • Plant Type: Warm-season annual

  • Growth Habit: Pole (climbing)

  • Vine Length: 6–10 feet

  • Days to Harvest (Fresh Shell Stage): 85–95 days

  • Pod Length: 4–6 inches

  • Seeds Per Pod: 3–5 large beans

Because it is a pole variety, it produces over a longer period than most bush limas.

Growing Instructions

Direct Sow Outdoors

Lima beans prefer warm soil and consistent heat.

  • Soil Temperature: At least 70°F

  • Planting Depth: 1–1½ inches

  • Spacing: 4–6 inches apart

  • Support: Trellis, fence, or pole system required

  • Sunlight: Full sun (6–8+ hours daily)

  • Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile

Wait until all danger of frost has passed and soil has thoroughly warmed before planting.

Trellising

Provide sturdy vertical support at planting time. Poles, cattle panels, or strong netting work well. Vertical growth increases airflow and simplifies harvesting.

Harvesting Options

For Fresh Shell Beans

✔ Harvest when pods are plump and bright green
✔ Shell while beans are full-sized but still tender
✔ Cook soon after harvest for best flavor

For Dry Beans

✔ Allow pods to mature and dry on the vine
✔ Harvest when pods become tan and brittle
✔ Shell and fully dry beans before storage

Culinary Uses

King of the Garden lima beans are prized for their creamy texture and rich taste:

🥣 Classic buttered lima beans
🍲 Hearty soups and stews
🥘 Slow-cooked casseroles
🥗 Warm bean salads
🫘 Freezing for later use

Fresh shell limas have a noticeably sweeter, more delicate flavor than store-bought dried beans.

Soil Health & Garden Benefits

As a legume, lima beans fix atmospheric nitrogen through beneficial root nodules, enriching soil for future crops.

Good companions:

  • Corn

  • Cucumbers

  • Squash

  • Sunflowers

Avoid planting near onions or garlic.

After harvest, leave roots in the soil to decompose naturally and improve fertility.

Ideal For

  • Home gardens

  • Organic growers

  • Heirloom collectors

  • Vertical gardening systems

  • Small farms

  • Homesteaders seeking storage crops

Its climbing habit makes it especially valuable where garden space is limited but vertical structures are available.

Came with low ink!
Model: 500N BNDL
Will edit! - currently just opened the machine to get it set up and the machine says ink is low, all ink is low. When I used the Amazon trouble shoot chat all it did was say sorry and gave me a link to return. I just want this machine to work with there to be ink! It’s not like this was cheap, the ink that comes with should work and not be empty.

Works Beautifully
Model: 500N BNDL
I looked up videos on YouTube to get tips on using this as I'm a visual learner. I love using my Cricut and making tumblers, and as someone familiar with crafting, it felt second nature using this. Everything worked smoothly and nothing seemed out of place. There’s a bit of a learning curve, but if you're crafty, you'll settle in quickly. The print quality is fantastic, easily higher quality than my inkjet printer. The included “starter ink” gets you going, and replacements are easy to get online. You use the ink they provide which lasts a long time. The results speak for themselves, sharp, vivid, and professional looking prints every time. Definite recommend from me!

Way too expensive, but good quality. Monopolies do that.
Model: 500N BNDL
Makes great prints but is twice the cost of what it should be and the ink is ridiculously expensive. The "starter ink" that is included will prime the lines, but will immediately show you a "low ink" warning. So be prepared to almost immediately spend another $350 on ink. If you use unauthorized ink Sawgrass will lock up your printer and make it unusable. That monopoly is how they can charge so much. Cost is the downside by a longshot. Also - having to use their "Print Manager" slows down production by adding several extra steps after pressing print. Making our shop less efficient. That being said - the quality of the prints we get with Sawgrass is superior to other printers for sublimation.

Changed for the worse
Model: 500N BNDL
I have used my sawgrass SG500’s and an SG1000 for over 10 years with great success and made around 250,000 mugs and ornaments. As you can see, all the 1 star reviews are from this year for good reason. I wish I had read them before I bought a new 500 model. All my prints are now grainy. I have spent days online and it is normal with the new Print Utility and it seems to be the same for everyone in the last few months. I have been unable to find a fix and customer service is useless. It takes days of chat and emails to have what would be a 15 minute conversation. I don’t want to go through the hassle of learning a new system but unless I can get my issues solved in the next few days, I will. The actual printing is faster but it takes several minutes per print to set up. I have to spend about 4-5 times as long to set up a print as I did with the old Print Manager. Instead of spending a half hour to print my art each day, I have to spend at least 2 hours and I get a lower quality print. Unless they can get me set up to use Print Manager again instead of the new Print Utility, I’m getting a different printer.

Not enough ink
Model: 500N BNDL
Printer is good quality but barely has enough ink to fill lines. With a printer of this cost you would think you would get a full tank of ink. Especially since replacement ink is over 300 dollars
