Native to the humid montane forests of Ecuador, Anthurium angamarcanum is a rare tropical aroid in the Araceae family admired for its elongated velvety foliage, elegant pendant growth habit, and highly refined appearance in cultivation. Though less commonly encountered than many of the larger velvet-leaf Anthuriums dominating the collector market, this species has developed a dedicated following among serious aroid enthusiasts for its graceful proportions, manageable size, and distinctly cloud forest character.

Unlike heavily bullate or massively cordate Anthurium species, Anthurium angamarcanum produces narrower elongated leaves with a soft velvety texture and pronounced venation that becomes increasingly attractive as the plant matures. The foliage often develops a rich deep green coloration with subtle reflective qualities under stable humidity and filtered lighting. Mature plants possess a very elegant almost pendant silhouette that gives the species a refined and highly naturalistic appearance.

In habitat, this species grows in cool-to-intermediate cloud forest environments where humidity remains consistently elevated and direct sunlight is heavily diffused by canopy cover. These ecological conditions translate exceptionally well to greenhouse cabinets, high-humidity grow spaces, tropical vivariums, and controlled indoor aroid collections.

One of the most appealing traits of Anthurium angamarcanum is its balance between rarity and growability. While unquestionably a collector species, it is generally more forgiving than many ultra-sensitive velvet Anthuriums provided it receives stable humidity, airflow, and an appropriately airy substrate. It responds especially well to conditions that mimic cloud forest environments: moderate temperatures, constant moisture availability, gentle air movement, and bright filtered light.

A highly breathable substrate is essential for long-term success. Like many epiphytic and semi-epiphytic Anthuriums, the roots prefer significant oxygen exchange and can decline quickly in compact or waterlogged mixes. Excellent results are typically achieved using blends containing orchid bark, tree fern fiber, sphagnum moss, coarse perlite, charcoal, pumice, coco husk, and other chunky tropical components.

Humidity between 70–100% produces the most impressive foliage, though acclimated plants can often tolerate slightly lower household humidity once established. Higher humidity encourages larger leaves, smoother unfurling, and stronger root development while also enhancing the velvety texture that makes the species so desirable.

Bright indirect lighting is ideal. Excessively dim conditions may reduce vigor and leaf size, while harsh direct exposure can stress foliage and diminish overall appearance. In well-balanced conditions, new leaves emerge with remarkable elegance and gradually harden into increasingly elongated mature foliage.

Though not a true miniature species, Anthurium angamarcanum remains relatively manageable compared to many oversized Anthurium collectors’ plants and adapts very well to greenhouse cabinets and larger vivarium systems during juvenile stages. It pairs beautifully alongside mosses, cloud forest begonias, miniature orchids, Marcgravia, and tropical epiphytes where its elongated foliage adds a softer architectural contrast.

For collectors seeking a refined velvet-leaf Anthurium with strong cloud forest aesthetics and excellent long-term growability, Anthurium angamarcanum ‘Type’ represents one of the more elegant and underrated Ecuadorian species currently in cultivation.

Heavy chewer approved.
Style: Ball, Size: Medium (Pack of 1)
My pomsky will destroy a toy in minutes. Ropes, and the "indestructible" nylon type stuffs are no match for my furry shark. This ball has stood up to him like David. He loves the crunch and it is so much more tolerable than a squeaker. These will be a staple in his toy box - Chuckit toys are really the most durable dog toys I have found in three years.

Dogs love them
Style: Ball, Size: Medium (Pack of 2)
Our dogs love these. What’s great is that you can add more plastic (like from water bottles) if the plastic starts to fall out from the center. If you have a chewer, though, these won’t last you long. Our shepherd mix loves these and then starts to pull the rubber apart the more she plays with it. Our other dogs treat it normally, though, and those ones last forever. They also get some decent height when bounced, and they make a unique whistling noise when thrown.

Our pup loves the cronch cronch!
Style: Ball, Size: Medium (Pack of 1)
I bought our 15 month old Coton several Chuck-It toys on an Amazon deal. He is incredibly playful, mischievous, and ball/toy obsessed, especially for anything that makes noise. He can also be very destructive so I love how durable most of their products are - they’re among our longest lasting toys and worth every penny. We have yet to take them to the dog park, but they’re a perfect size for sharing in play time. And they are keeping him busy at home - that’s a good thing. He loves investigating the crunchy-cronchy-crinkly sound which is a nice change from squeakers. It can withstand his destructive chewing well-being, gentle on his little teeth. I love that. Chuck-It is thinking outside the box with a variety of balls to keep dogs engaged! I do worry about the crinkle plastic inside because it is accessible because of the air holes and it feels a little sharp. So this will have to be an at home toy so we can monitor his play.
