Forget your past experience with poinsettias from big-box stores: Our Poinsettias are locally grown in Half Moon Bay, hand-picked for health and quality, and inspected for pests. This means that you will be enjoying your gorgeous plants for many, many months past Christmas if you so desire.

The Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) has a fascinating history that dates back to pre-Columbian Mexico. The plant was originally known by the Aztecs as "Cuetlaxochitl," which means "flower that withers, mortal flower" in the Nahuatl language. The Aztecs used the plant for various purposes, including as a dye for textiles and in traditional medicine.

Poinsettias gained popularity as a festive decoration and symbol of the holiday season in the United States in the early 1800s, when the first US Ambassador to Mexico brought the plant back to the states. December 12th, the day honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico, also coincided with the blooming period of poinsettias, further enhancing its significance during the Christmas season.  Over time poinsettias became (and remain!!) the best selling houseplant of all time.

As a houseplant, poinsettias are valued for their colorful bracts (modified leaves) that surround the small, inconspicuous flowers. These bracts come in various shades, including scarlet red, pink, white, and even multicolored varieties! While they are typically purchased during the holiday season, many people discard them after flowering. However, with proper care, poinsettias can be kept year round and encouraged to bloom again the following year!

The poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) has a rich history that dates back to pre-Columbian Mexico. The plant was originally known by the Aztecs as "Cuetlaxochitl," which means "flower that withers, mortal flower" in the Nahuatl language. The Aztecs used the plant for various purposes, including as a dye for textiles and in traditional medicine.

One significant aspect of the poinsettia's history is its association with the Christmas season. Legend has it that a poor Mexican girl named Pepita wanted to give a gift to baby Jesus but couldn't afford anything grand. An angel appeared to her and advised her to gather weeds from the roadside. When she placed these humble weeds at the church altar, they miraculously transformed into vibrant red poinsettias. This story contributed to the plant's association with Christmas and its popularity during the holiday season.

The plant's association with Christmas was further solidified by Joel Poinsett, the first U.S. ambassador to Mexico in the early 19th century. Poinsett introduced the plant to the United States after encountering it in Mexico in 1828. The plant was eventually named in his honor.

Here are some tips for caring for poinsettias year-round:

  1. Light: Poinsettias prefer bright light. Place them near a sunny window, but avoid more than a few hours of direct sunlight, as too much hot direct sun can scorch the leaves.

  2. Temperature: Poinsettias thrive in temperatures between 60-75°F (18-24°C). Avoid exposing them to drafts or extreme temperature fluctuations.

  3. Watering: Keep the soil consistently humid but not waterlogged. Water when the surface of the soil feels dry to the touch. Always drain excess water from the saucer to prevent root rot.  Watering once a week is about right for most people.

  4. Humidity: Poinsettias benefit from moderate humidity. If the air in your home is dry, consider placing a tray of water near the plant or using a humidifier - but most people in the San Francisco Bay Area will have no problem meeting this plant's humidity needs.

  5. Fertilization: Feed the plant with a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer every 2-4 weeks any time the plant is actively growing.

  6. Pruning: After the poinsettia's initial bloom, you can encourage a bushier shape by pinching back the stems in late spring. Wear gloves as the plant exudes a milky sap that may irritate sensitive skin.

  7. Reflowering: Getting a poinsettia to bloom again can be challenging but not impossible. Starting in mid October, expose the plant to complete darkness for 14 hours each night for about 6 weeks. This mimics the plant's natural response to shorter days and longer nights, stimulating flower production.  (I have had success setting a timer on my phone and placing the plant in a closet from 5pm to 8am each day).

By following these guidelines, you can enjoy your poinsettia beyond the holiday season and encourage it to bloom again in the following year!

SO GOOD
Color: Light
This product is so velvety and goes onto the skin so nicely. As per usual, it feels like natural skin but it has great coverage -- I was pleasantly surprised. I don't know what Colorscience does, but they have the magic. I am a forever customer of all of their products. It's a plus that their products are good for the skin AND have SPF as well.

Holy grail of tinted spf
Color: Light
I’ve tried numerous brands that I won’t mention but at least 20…. and this little tube of tint was my answer. I have very light skin and every other brand has a light shade that isn’t light enough or is too yellow or orange. Well the tint du soliel in light is the perfect answer to my fair pink undertone skin. It is the most beautiful consistency and I apply it with a beauty blender (yes I lose some product with the blender method - but the final result is an EVEN beautiful light and natural tint that literally looks like skin itself- absolutely no streaking or cakiness). It was remarkably easy to blend and immediately set to its beautiful satin finish. I’m just floored at how good my face looks. It’s very pricey at $60 for just 1.0 oz, but with this formula and aesthetic, it is absolutely worth it. I just ordered another one even though I’m not even half way through my first bottle! I’m a fan for life. Try this tint du soleil!!!!

Amazing Sunscreen! Large Bottle and Pump is Great!
Size: 12 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: Sport Lotion SPF 50, Size: 12 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: Sport Lotion SPF 50
I’ve been buying this Banana Boat sunscreen with SPF50 for a while and I wish I found it years ago because it makes putting on sunscreen so easy. Been buying it for family members as well! The pump is amazing—I keep one in my bathroom and one in my bedroom so I never forget. It’s a really big bottle so it lasts a long time, and it spreads super easily with no white cast at all, even on my face. The scent is really light and neutral too, which I love. It just melts into your skin, doesn’t feel sticky, and works for everything—face, hands, arms, legs. It’s one of those products you actually end up using every day because it’s so easy and convenient. I keep repurchasing it for a reason! Highly recommend!

My AmazonFinds/ SPF 50 Sunscreen
Size: 12 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: Sport Lotion SPF 50, Size: 12 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: Sport Lotion SPF 50
I’ve been using this Banana Boat Sport SPF 50 sunscreen and I really like it. It goes on smoothly and absorbs quickly without feeling too greasy or heavy on the skin. I also like that it’s water and sweat resistant, which makes it perfect for outdoor activities or beach days. It provides strong sun protection and I feel confident using it when I’m out in the sun for long periods. The scent is light and not overpowering. Overall, it’s a reliable sunscreen that I would definitely buy again.

Very good sunscreen, advice from a pale-skinned person
Size: 12 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: Sport Lotion SPF 50
I'm Scottish by descent, and so is my skin. This stuff works well, is pleasant, not greasy and seems to hang on despite kiteboarding, surfing, cycling, whatever. Pleasant smell, good dispenser.
