So this one, we didn't see it coming! Vaguely announced for several years by Peter Diezel, we can say that in Bad Steben we take our time! The first prototypes were visible at NAMM 2016, but it was at the end of the year that the first pedal in the range made its appearance. Designed in Germany by Peter and his team, the VH4 Pedal is made in sunny California under the direction of his great pal Dave Friedman. On the program, a pre-amp in an extraordinary pedal format which restores the main sound characteristics of the legendary channel 3 of the famous Diezel VH4 head. If you have never heard this anthology channel, listen to the right hand of Mr. James Hetfield for example, who has been using it for several decades, or even Alter Bridge and Matt Bellamy, who are all real users from head to the imposing black front grille. With the VH4, we have a part of the history of "big sound" underfoot. Pre-amp requires, the VH4 can therefore be used on a clean channel in a conventional manner, or directly in a power amp or other. Couldn't be more versatile.
Aesthetically, the pedal has a very nice brushed aluminum finish. It is more imposing than the classic formats but remains extremely light. To be the "VH4", of course, it needed the same controls and buttons as the head. We will therefore find the same "master" section as on the latter. Namely, Master, Presence (to adjust the top of the spectrum) and Deep which is a great classic of the brand, this one acting as a contour but with the possibility of controlling the "ommpff" factor in the attack, which contributes greatly to the Diezel sound signature. Next come the usual Treble, Middle, Bass and Gain controls. On this version 2 which is a "dual channel" we therefore have 1 Master and 1 dedicated Gain for each channel. A highly sympathetic detail, the pedal takes up the design of the perforated grid with "D", emblematic of the brand. On the front of the pedal (thanks to the jacks on the top, it's nice) there are In and Out and also a specific output to drive a power amp. It's beautiful, right down to the packaging (quality box, transformer and accessories provided)!

Come on, we plug it into a very dynamic pure clean channel, that of the Two-Rock Classic Reverb . ESP Custom Shop Explorer and Suhr Super Strat in hand, we attack with a flat EQ and a Gain at 09:00. Good... As much to tell you right away, already, with this setting, it picks up! The master is only at 08:30 and there is already a very nice compression and a "bulldozer" side that dangerously reminds us of the original head. By changing absolutely nothing, but just by raising the Gain to 12:00, the pedal gives you a monumental slap! It's simple, it's neither more nor less an amp channel. It's very rich, ultra dense, with an extremely fast response and a high midrange typical of the German brand. A kind of straighter and more compact Super Marshall, without the nasal side at the top of the spectrum. We are looking at the settings to stick as close as possible to the original head that we have a few centimeters away during the test. The friedman is everything at 12:00, the pedal, Master 9:00, we remove a little Presence, we boost the Deep a little at 13:00, the mids slightly scooped, the gain at 14:00... How tell you? It's simple, there are plenty of amps at a few thousand euros that are not half the colossal sound produced by the VH4 on our test configuration. The EQ is AMAZING, the pedal silent and responsive... We hit a chord and we're clearly there! If you are looking for THE metal pedal, this VH4 is a real slap in the face for its competitors. The palm mutes are enormous, the precision formidable, at no time does the VH4 sound "transo", this one proving massive and tuned to perfection for big sound. Few products can stand the comparison.

Top-notch manufacturing, an EQ of diabolical efficiency, a very wide gain range and above all a rendering in total adequacy with the original sound signature of the head, make the VH4-2 Pedal an absolute must-have. A formidable alternative to the Friedman BE-OD, Strymon Riverside and other Bogner... If you are looking for a pedal for big sound, with a low medium voicing, medium scooped and a very precise high end, this Diezel pre-amp is made for you! GR Award 2016! To try absolutely.

Thrilling Battles, Exciting Storyline & Cinema Quality Artwork
Format: Kindle
Wow! What a series. I had several friends recommended the Vader comic and they were right. It's an exceptional undertaking. Cinema quality artwork and an excellent storyline worthy of a novel. I finally picked up this Vader Down edition to find out what happened in between the first main Vader series. It does not disappoint. Vader is trapped on a world while searching for Like Skywalker and surrounded by rebel forces. This being Vader, a Dark Lord of the Sith, poses no problem. It features one of the best lines, "I am surrounded by fear. And dead men." He takes out three entire squads of rebel troops before confronting an Imperial ambush. Dr. Alpha and her murderous droids face off against Han Solo. Good vs bad Wookie fights and droid fights also add to the fray. A must read for Star Wars fans. Thrilling storyline and gorgeous artwork (I love how the characters look like the actors) make this a worthy addition to your comic collection. Magnificent.

Excellent, musst-read crossover story!
Format: Paperback
Jason Aaron is hands-down one of my favorite comic book writers. The characters in his Star Wars books in particular 'sound' exactly like they do on screen, which is a tough thing to pull off for such a well-loved universe. This series is extremely well put together with beautiful art and coloring. I simply couldn't be happier with the direction that Marvel is taking. The blend of 'familiar', while keeping things unique and fresh is really well done. I also love how Aaron enhances little details from the movies that I never really stopped to think about before, providing satisfying glimpses into the stories we know and love that fit beautifully into canon. This graphic novel in particular tells a fantastic story about Darth Vader's relentless pursuit to figure out who it was that destroyed the Death Star. Seeing the growth of Luke as a character in these early days is also fascinating. Definitely a must-read addition to the Star Wars canon!

Action Packed Crossover
Format: Kindle
Vader Down collects the crossover issues between Marvel's Star Wars and Darth Vader ongoing series. Luke Skywalker has gone to Vrogas Vas to find a former Jedi temple to learn more about the Jedi Order. Through the connections of Doctor Aphra, Vader has discovered his location and moves to intercept. Along with Vader is Aphra and her murderous droids, Triple Zero and BeeTee. Luke isn't without assistance as Leia, Han Solo, Chewie and C3PO head to Vrogas Vas along with a Rebellion army in order to take down Vader once and for all. The book paints a picture that shows how dangerous Vader can actually be -- he individually goes up against an entire squadron of rebellion X-Wings with a single tie fighter. It also sets up some entertaining face-offs such as droid versus droid (C3PO and Triple Zero; R2 and Beetee), wookie versus wookie (Chewie and the bounty hunter, Black Krssantan), rogue versus rogue (Han Solo and Doctor Aphra), and Jedi vs Sith (Luke and Vader). The book also sets the final showdown between Vader and Commander Karbin, one of the various protoge's of Doctor Cylo who were aiming to replace Vader as Palpatine's apprentice. Overall, the book is a decent read despite being a bit predictable. The showdowns between various opposing characters are entertaining and the book advances the storyline of both series. It does require a bit of an open-mind because it's supposed to be part of the canon of the Star Wars universe, but as with a previous confrontation between Luke and Vader, it comes off as a bit odd given their interactions in The Empire Strikes Back. The artwork varies a bit between Salvador Larocca and Mike Deodato. Both produce high quality work, but each chapter alternates between the two which can be a bit awkward to get used to.

Vader may be Down, but he is far, far from out.
Format: Paperback
I have been consistently pleased with the Darth Vader and Star Wars comic series, and the Vader Down crossover kicks it up to 11. It is easy, watching the movies, to forget how powerful Vader truly is. Anakin Skywalker was a prophesied Jedi Hero, or phenomenal raw talent. In only a few years he outclassed Jedi Knights who had been training two or three times as long as he had, but in the Original Trilogy, we have very few glimpses of that power. Not so in Vader Down. I won't spoil it, but let's just say Darth Vader has an impressive kill count. Within the lightsaber duels, fire fights, and interstellar dog fights, Vader Down (And the rest of the Darth Vader series) still finds time to build, if not sympathy, at least understanding for Darth Vader as a character. He is still a villain, but you find yourself rooting for his success more often than not. Overall, a phenomenal read. I cannot recommend it enough.
